A great temporary tattoo is 10% the design and 90% how you apply and look after it. The good news: it takes under a minute, and a few small habits make the difference between a tattoo that fades in two days and one that goes the full 5–8 days. Here's everything you need.
Step 1: Prep the skin
Clean, dry, hair-free skin is the single biggest factor in how well a temporary tattoo bonds.
- Pick a smooth, flat area — inner forearm, calf, shoulder. Avoid knuckles, elbows and other high-flex spots where skin creases constantly.
- Wash and dry the area. Skip moisturiser, oil, sunscreen and makeup — anything greasy stops the ink gripping.
- If the spot is hairy, shave it. Hair lifts the edges and shortens the life of the tattoo.
Step 2: Wet, press, peel
The application itself is three moves:
- Position the tattoo face-down on your skin and peel off the clear top film.
- Press a damp cloth firmly over the backing paper and hold for 20–30 seconds. Make sure the whole design is soaked through — dry patches won't transfer.
- Peel the paper away slowly from one corner. Let the tattoo air-dry for a couple of minutes before touching it.
Don't rush the peel. If any part still looks faint, lay the damp cloth back down for another 10 seconds before lifting.
Step 3: Make it last
Once it's on, a little care keeps it crisp for days:
- Keep it dry for the first hour so the ink fully sets.
- Avoid friction. Tight sleeves, watch straps and bag straps rubbing over the tattoo are its biggest enemy.
- Go easy with oils and lotions directly on top — they break the design down faster.
- In the shower, pat dry instead of rubbing with a towel.
Removing it cleanly
When you're done, there's no scrubbing required. Dab the tattoo with baby oil, coconut oil or a makeup-removing wipe, let it soak in for a few seconds, and wipe away. A little rubbing alcohol clears any stubborn remnants.
Is it safe for my skin?
Our tattoos are printed in vegan, CPNP-registered ink made for sensitive skin — but everyone's skin is different. If you have known sensitivities, do a small patch test on your inner arm first. Curious about what's actually in the ink? Read are temporary tattoos safe?
That's it — clean skin, a damp cloth, and a gentle touch for the first hour. Browse designs or generate your own and put this into practice.
